Have you ever been without work and wondered if God forgot about you?
Maybe you’ve sent out dozens of applications with no response. Maybe you’ve been laid off and don’t know how you’ll pay the bills. Maybe you’ve been praying for a job for months, and it feels like heaven is silent.
If that’s where you are right now, this article is for you.
Here’s the truth: God gives jobs.
The very first thing God gave Adam was a job (Genesis 2:15). He also gave Joseph, Daniel, Mordecai, Nehemiah, and the Levites their jobs. And He has a job prepared for you too.
In our previous articles, we’ve covered https://benbassee.com/foundations-for-effective-prayer/why your prayers feel unanswered, how to pray in God’s will and how to persist in prayer. Now it’s time to apply everything you’ve learned to another critical area: praying for a job.
Let’s look at three powerful steps to land the job God has prepared for you—and then we’ll pray together. This is what praying for a job looks like in action.
Why Would God Give You a Job?
Before you pray, it’s important to understand why God provides employment for His children.
1. To Help You Fulfil Your Purpose
“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you were born I sanctified you; I ordained you a prophet to the nations.” — Jeremiah 1:5 (NKJV)
You have a purpose here on earth, and your purpose usually determines your strengths, gifts, and natural abilities.
This is important because God gives you jobs according to your strengths, gifts, and abilities. He will not give you a role you are not equipped or qualified for.
- Jeremiah’s purpose was to call the children of Judah back to God and warn them of the exile (Jeremiah 1:5).
- Joseph’s purpose was to fulfil God’s promise to Abraham by preparing a place for the children of Israel to grow into a nation (Genesis 15:13-16).
- Bezalel’s purpose was to design and create the ark of God and all the relevant items of worship (Exodus 31:2).
God does not assign randomly. He matches your purpose with your position. This is one of the reasons praying for a job works.
2. To Bring Him Glory
“Make it your goal to live a quiet life, minding your own business and working with your hands, just as we instructed you before. Then people who are not believers will respect the way you live, and you will not need to depend on others.” — 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12 (NLT)
One of your primary tasks as a child of God is to bring Him glory by reflecting His glory in all you do. He wants you to be a living testimony of His goodness, wisdom, and power.
- Potiphar noticed that God was with Joseph and gave him success in everything he did (Genesis 39:3).
- After Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream, Pharaoh asked his officials, “Can we find anyone else like this man so obviously filled with the spirit of God?” (Genesis 41:38).
- In Daniel 5:11, the queen mother said about Daniel, “There is a man in your kingdom who has within him the spirit of the holy gods.”
- Nebuchadnezzar declared to Daniel, “Truly, your God is the greatest of gods, the Lord over kings, a revealer of mysteries” (Daniel 2:47).
When you work with excellence and integrity, your job becomes a platform for God’s glory. This is what praying for a job can lead to.
3. So You Can Give
“For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.” — Matthew 25:35-36 (NLT)
“If you are a thief, quit stealing. Instead, use your hands for good, hard work, and then give generously to others in need.” — Ephesians 4:28 (NLT)
God is love, and the nature of love is to give. As His child, you are expected to live in love. This includes giving to those in need and giving toward God’s work.
- In Acts 4:34, there was no needy person among the believers because they provided for one another.
- In Acts 11:29, the believers in Antioch sent relief to the brothers and sisters in Jerusalem.
- In Exodus 25:1, when it was time for Moses to build the tabernacle, God instructed him to take freewill offerings from the people of Israel.
- David, after donating tons of gold and silver, asked the people to bring freewill offerings toward the building of the temple (1 Chronicles 29:5).
You cannot give if you do not have. To have, you need to work. This is why praying for a job matters. This is why praying for a job matters.

Personal Testimony
In 2022, I quit my job to start my own business. Things did not go as planned. A few months later, I was severely broke and drowning in bills. It got so bad that feeding was a problem.
One day, after praying to God for a job, the Lord said to me: “I will give you a job, a house, and a car.” I told my wife what I heard, and we believed God.
The following week, I felt an urge to open LinkedIn. When I did, the first thing I saw was a job tailor-made for me. I applied, got an interview, spoke to the CEO, and was hired in less than two weeks. The pay was five times more than my last role—and it was in dollars, not naira. I was flown out that same month to join the team at a retreat in Ivory Coast. The car and house came the following month.
If God can provide for me, He can provide for you too.
Prayer Points for a Job
Use these prayer points as a guide. Personalise them. Pray them in your own words, from your own heart.
Prayer Point 1: Align with God’s Purpose
Father, the very first commandment You gave Adam was for him to work. This means You do not want us to be idle, and that there is already a job prepared for us before we were born. Lord, provide me a job that aligns with my strengths, talents, and gifts. Lead me and show me what to do, that I might find the work You have prepared for me (Genesis 2:15, Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 49:5, Psalm 32:8). In Jesus’ name.
Prayer Point 2: Ask for Divine Connections
Father, just as You used the butler to refer Joseph to Pharaoh, use people who have seen my ability to refer me to job opportunities. Let them remember my name when opportunities for work are available. Guide me to find work so I can provide for myself and for those in need (Genesis 41:9, 2 Thessalonians 3:10, Ephesians 4:28). In Jesus’ name.
Prayer Point 3: Receive Your Job by Faith
Lord, You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. What You did for Adam, Joseph, and Daniel, You can do for me. You say that whatever we ask in the name of Jesus, we shall receive. Lord, I thank You for the job You have given me before I was made, and I receive it. In Jesus’ name.
I Pray With You
Father, it is Your will that we work, for You also work. Direct Your child’s steps to the job You have provided for them. Raise people to speak on their behalf. Grant their request and provide them with a job that brings You glory. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
A Final Word: Excel Where You Are
As you wait for your dream job, remember this: do not despise the days of little beginnings.
Whatever your hands find to do, do it well. Those seemingly meaningless or dead-end tasks could pave the way to the future job you desire.
Joseph excelled as an administrator and interpreter of dreams. He excelled in Potiphar’s house and in prison. Daniel was found to be ten times more capable than any of the magicians and enchanters in Nebuchadnezzar’s entire kingdom (Daniel 1:20).
To excel, you need to be diligent in your work. And diligence opens doors that no man can shut.
