How to Pray in God’s Will: 3 Powerful Ways to Get Answers

Have you ever prayed and wondered, “Am I doing this right?” If you’re searching for how to pray in God’s will, you’re not alone. Many believers struggle with this question, because they’ve never been taught how.

Maybe you’ve said all the right words. Maybe you’ve even quoted Scripture. But somewhere deep down, you weren’t sure if your prayer actually aligned with what God wanted.

Here’s the good news: there is no magic incantation, no sequence of words that forces God’s hand. You don’t need to find the “secret password” or repeat the perfect formula.

But there is a way to pray that aligns your heart with His will. A way that builds your faith. A way that positions you to receive what He has already promised.

That’s what we’re going to explore in this article. Not how to manipulate God but how to partner with Him.

Before You Pray: Three Questions to Ask Yourself

Before we dive into how to pray in God’s will, first you must understand that prayer doesn’t begin when you open your mouth. It begins in your heart and mind long before. To pray effectively, you need to prepare.

To prepare well before praying, you need to answer three questions:

1. What exactly do you want?

Be specific. Vague prayers often receive vague answers.

• Hannah knew she wanted a son.
• Bartimaeus knew he wanted his sight.
• The centurion knew he wanted his servant healed.

What do you want? Name it clearly.

2. Do you have a case?

A case is your reason for believing God will answer. Is there a promise you can stand on? Is there a precedent you can point to?

Effective prayer is presenting your request in light of what He has already said and done.

3. What scriptures or precedents support your case?

This is the heart of this teaching. When you find what God has promised, you remind Him of it. When you find where He has done the same thing before, it boosts your faith.

The Word of God is not just ancient history. It is a living truth that still holds power today.

Now that you understand the preparation, let’s look at three specific ways to pray effectively. These methods will show you how to pray in God’s will with confidence and clarity.

1. Pray According to What God Has Promised

“Listen to my prayer; rescue me as you promised. Let praise flow from my lips, for you have taught me your decrees.” — Psalm 119:170-171 (NLT)

Whatever Jehovah promises to do, He does. This is what sets Him apart from every other so-called god.

In Isaiah 45:21, He asks:

“Who has declared this from ancient times? Who has told it from that time? Have not I, the LORD? And there is no other God besides Me, a just God and a Saviour; there is none besides Me.” — Isaiah 45:21 (NLT)

The reason He is God is because He is the only one who says things and makes them happen.

He is so sure of His ability, He actually invites us to remind Him of what He has said:

“Put Me in remembrance; Let us contend together; State your case, that you may be acquitted.” — Isaiah 43:26 (NKJV)

God is not offended when we bring His own words back to Him. He welcomes it. He invites it.

Two Examples of Reminding God of His Promises

Moses Reminds God of His Promise

In Exodus 32, when Jehovah wanted to destroy the Israelites for worshipping the golden calf, Moses interceded by reminding Him of the promise He made to Abraham:

“Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.'” — Exodus 32:13 (NKJV)

On hearing this, the Bible says God repented from the disaster He had planned to bring on His people.

Hezekiah Reminds God of His Faithfulness

When Hezekiah was sick and told he was going to die, he prayed:

“Remember now, O LORD, I pray, how I have walked before You in truth and with a loyal heart, and have done what was good in Your sight.” — 2 Kings 20:3 (NKJV)

Hezekiah was reminding God of His words in Deuteronomy 7, which promised that if they served Jehovah diligently, He would protect them from sickness and heal them.

And God did not just heal Hezekiah, but He added fifteen more years to his life.

Finding out what Jehovah has promised regarding your request—whether healing, protection, provision, or a job—is an effective way of how to pray in God’s will because “He who promised is faithful” (Hebrews 10:23). When you pray His promises back to Him, you are praying exactly what He wants to answer.

2. Pray According to What God Has Done Before

If Jehovah has done what you are requesting for someone else, then He can do it for you, too.

“God is no respecter of persons: but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.” — Acts 10:34-35 (KJV)

When Peter made this statement, he was pleasantly surprised that God had anointed the Gentiles with the Holy Spirit. What God had done for the Jews, He was now doing for others.

The crowds followed Jesus because they had heard what He had done for others and came to be healed as well.

Two Examples of Praying Based on Precedents

The Woman with the Issue of Blood

We are all familiar with this woman, but do you know she was not the first person healed by touching Jesus?

Two chapters before her story, in Luke 6:19, the Bible says that a crowd followed Him and “everyone tried to touch him, because healing power went out from him, and he healed everyone.”

When she heard this, she said to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed” (Mark 5:27, Luke 8:43).

She anchored her faith in a precedent, and she received her healing.

Elisha Parting the Jordan

In 2 Kings chapter 2, after Elisha received a double portion of Elijah’s anointing, he returned to the Jordan River. He folded Elijah’s mantle and struck the water—just as he had seen Elijah do.

And the Jordan parted.

Elisha did not invent a new method. He simply did what he had seen his spiritual father do. The precedent worked because the God behind it had not changed.

Finding a precedent builds your faith and shows you how to pray in God’s will. This is the power of testimonies. If God has done it before, He can do it again. He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8).

3. Pray in the Name of Jesus

“Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth.” — Philippians 2:9-10 (NIV)

Before Jesus was crucified, He gave His disciples a promise:

“I tell you the truth, you will ask the Father directly, and he will grant your request because you use my name.” — John 16:23 (NLT)

He then clarified in verses 26 and 27 that He did not mean He would pray on their behalf. Rather, they would ask the Father directly in His name.

This means you now have direct access to God through the name of Jesus.

Even before His death, Jesus demonstrated the power in His name by sending the disciples out to preach and heal. And they returned testifying that “even the demons were subject to them in His name” (Luke 10:17).

Examples of Praying in the Name of Jesus

1. The Lame Man at the Temple Gate

The very first healing recorded after the death of Jesus was the healing of a lame man by Peter and John. Peter said:

“Silver and gold I do not have, but what I do have I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk.” — Acts 3:6 (NKJV)

Instantly, the man’s feet and ankle bones became strong. And he began to walk and leap, praising God.

2. Saul of Tarsus

When Saul encountered Jesus on the road to Damascus, he became blind. Ananias came to him and said:

“Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” — Acts 9:17 (NKJV)

Immediately, scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and his sight was restored.

3. The Slave Girl with a Spirit of Divination

A certain slave girl, possessed by a spirit of divination, followed Paul around for days. Finally, Paul, fed up, turned and said:

“I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” — Acts 16:18 (NKJV)

Immediately, the spirit came out.

There is power in the name of Jesus. Not magic, authority.

When you pray in His name, you are not adding a formula to the end of your prayer. You are:

• Standing in His place
• Acting as His representative
• Accessing the Father through the relationship He made possible

Praying in the name of Jesus is the foundation of how to pray in God’s will today. This is the reason He came to die for us. To give us full access to the God our Father.

So What Happens When the Answer Doesn’t Come?

Now you know how to pray in God’s will:

• Pray according to God’s promises—remind Him of what He said.
• Pray according to God’s precedents—stand on what He has done before.
• Pray in the name of Jesus—access the Father through the Son.
