Prayer is simply communicating with God. It is a meeting between you and your Creator.

Whenever you talk to Him, worship Him, thank Him, confess to Him, praise Him, or ask Him for something, you are praying. For this article, we’ll focus on one specific type: petitions, also known as supplications.

In plain language, a petition is asking God to do something you cannot do for yourself, knowing full well that nothing is impossible for Him.

And the best part is: He actually invites you to ask.

Jesus said:

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NLT)

Peter echoed this when he wrote:

“Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” — 1 Peter 5:7 (NLT)

And the writer of Hebrews gives us this bold encouragement:

“Let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.” — Hebrews 4:16 (NLT)

Boldly. Not timidly. Not hesitantly. Not with your head hung low, wondering if you’re worthy enough to even speak.

This confidence is not in yourself or your words, but in the God who hears you. This is the first of the foundations for effective prayer.

How You Pray Doesn’t Matter As Much As You Think

Here’s something that might surprise you.

Prayer can be silent, like Hannah praying quietly for a child (1 Samuel 1:13).

It can be loud, like Paul and Silas singing hymns and praying aloud in a prison cell at midnight (Acts 16:25).

It can be long, like Moses interceding for Israel.

Or it can be short, like Peter’s desperate cry when he began to sink beneath the waves: “Lord, save me!” (Matthew 14:30).

The length, volume, or eloquence of your prayer is not what matters most.

What matters is that you please God by praying according to His will (1 John 5:14) and by ensuring your heart is true because He examines the heart, not the performance (Jeremiah 17:10). These are the other foundations of an effective prayer life.

That’s why David prayed:

“O LORD, hear my plea for justice. Listen to my cry for help. Pay attention to my prayer, for it comes from honest lips.” — Psalm 17:1 (NLT)

Honest lips. Not perfect lips. Not eloquent lips. Honest lips.

So the 3 foundations for effective prayer are Confidence in God, praying in His will and ensuring your heart is true.
