3 Biblical Truths Why God Answers Prayers (And It’s Not About You)

This article was written to answer that thought we have all probably pondered: why God answers prayers. It’s not like He owes us anything, so why should He even listen to us?

Or maybe you’ve thought:

• I’m not holy enough.
• I made too many mistakes.
• There are people more deserving than me.

If that thought has ever crossed your mind, you’re not alone. And here’s the truth:

God doesn’t answer your prayers because of who you are. He answers because of who He is.

The Bible gives us three main reasons why God answers your prayers, and none of them has anything to do with your abilities, your worthiness, or your righteousness.

Let’s look at each one.

1. Because He Said He Would

“I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips.” — Psalm 89:34 (ESV)

Whatever God says, He does. He is unable to break His word. And He has promised over and over again to answer our prayers.

Consider these promises:

• Jeremiah 33:3 — “Call unto me, and I will answer you.”
• Isaiah 65:24 — “Before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will hear.”
• Isaiah 58:9 — “Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry, and He will say, ‘Here I am.'”

He is a covenant-keeping God. His word is His bond. When He promises to hear you, He means it. This is a key reason why God answers prayers.

2. Because You Are His Child

The number 2 reason why God answers prayers is that we belong to Him.

After the dedication of the temple, God gave Solomon a promise that remains true thousands of years later:

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven.” — 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)

Notice the phrase: “My people who are called by My name.”

Children are named after their fathers. Jehovah is your Father. And just as a father listens to and grants the requests of his child, so does Jehovah listen to and answer your prayers.

This is not because you deserve it. It is because you belong to Him.

Jesus made this same point in Matthew 7:

“What man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent? If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” — Matthew 7:9-11 (NKJV)

Think about that. Even imperfect, flawed human fathers know how to provide for their children. How much more does your perfect, loving, all-powerful Father in heaven want to provide for you?

Well, this is the heritage of the servants of God.

3. To Prove He Is God

A very important reason why God answers prayers is to prove Himself.

Just before Elijah prayed for fire to fall from heaven, he made a bold statement:

“The god who answers by setting fire to the wood is the true God!” — 1 Kings 18:24 (NLT)

If you read verse 1 of that same chapter, you’ll see that God had already told Elijah to present himself to Ahab because He (God) was about to send rain. So Elijah wasn’t just asking for fire; he was asking God to prove Himself in front of a nation that had turned away.

God answered. Fire fell. The people believed, and fell on their faces and cried out, “The Lord, He is God!”

Here’s another powerful example. In 2 Chronicles 20, a vast army had gathered against Judah. King Jehoshaphat prayed one of the most desperate prayers in Scripture (verses 5-12; it’s worth studying). God’s response?

“Do not be afraid! Don’t be discouraged by this mighty army, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.” — 2 Chronicles 20:15 (NLT)

Then He told them to “stand still and watch His victory” (verse 17). Not theirs. His.

Over and over in Scripture, God answers prayers to prove that He is God and to defend His honour.

He does this for several reasons:

• To call His children back to Him
• To calm their fears so they can learn to trust Him
• To let them know that He is a faithful God
• To show that there is no other God besides Him

So no, God does not answer your prayers because you are perfect or holy. He does it because He wants to, not because of your works, but because of your faith and trust in Him.

“He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy.” — Exodus 33:19

What About Those Who Are Not Yet His Children?

This is an important question. So far we have looked at why God answers prayers of His children.

But while the promise of answered prayer is primarily for God’s children, His mercy often extends beyond the walls of His household. David invited people to “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:8). How else would there be new converts if they did not first experience the power of Jehovah?

Throughout Scripture, we see unbelievers who sought Him and found Him:

• Naaman, the Syrian commander, came to Elisha seeking healing and left worshipping the God of Israel.
• Nebuchadnezzar, the arrogant king of Babylon, was humbled until he blessed and praised and honoured the King of heaven.
• The book of Acts records numerous miracles followed by testimonies and conversions.

Even now, God is not hiding. He is not playing games. He is waiting with arms wide open for anyone who will seek Him.

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.” — Jeremiah 29:13 (NIV)

So Where Do We Go From Here?
